Western Digitals 20k rpm drive to knock SSDs off their feet
by yogesh Facing competition from new SSD drives, the rumor mills are abuzz that Western digital is working on a new 20,000 rpm Raptor HDD. The buzz in Taipei is that SSDs are eventually to become dirt cheap and that durability has taken priority over capacity, which is why hard drive manufacturers are keen on grabbing the limelight from SSDs. The new 20K rpm Raptor series specifications are not yet fully disclosed but from what we know the new drive will be a 2.5in drive with custom 3.5in housing built around it and will be very silent. A new technology has been developed to ensure the drive doesn’t vibrate at high speeds by altering the spindle housing.
