Nokia takes Research in Motion to court over wireless LAN usage

by Gavril Mankoo

In yet another legal tussle, Nokia has now pulled up Research in Motion by the collar, requesting a California court to enforce an arbitration award that will keep the makers of the lovable BlackBerry from selling devices with wireless LAN capabilities! According to Nokia, Research in Motion “is not entitled to manufacture or sell products compatible with the WLAN standard without first agreeing with Nokia on the royalty to be paid for its manufacture and/or sale of subscriber terminals compatible with such standards.”

While most of the devices that regularly roll out of RIM’s assembly lines use the 802.11 wireless LAN standards, the two companies are yet to come to a settlement. In the meanwhile, we’re just going to continue Pinging our BBM buddies incessantly.
