Marvel brings Augmented Reality app exclusively for digital comics
by ruchiJust yesterday at SXSW, Marvel announced its partnership with Autonomy’s Aurasma platform to bring in AR goodness for Marvel’s digital comics. Users will now will be able to watch video trailers of books they see in stores, as well as 3D animation, recaps, and other augmented reality extras by holding their phones up to comics. So it would be like having your favorite 3D super heroes stepping out of the print books. As a part of the Marvel ReEvolution revamp, they’ll be unveiling free iOS and Android apps to power the augmented reality experiences.
Aurasma demoed the AR experience and it was said to be quite impressive. They had earlier unveiled their AR engine at CES in January. Marvel executive also conceded that their goal is to build out DVD and Blu-Ray extras into the comic book itself. Whether users buy a print or digital version, they’ll get to check out animated videos, pencils, colors, and primers on past issues in a series. The features will debut in a several month-long Avengers Vs. X-Men run later this year. Marvel Infinite Comics will the first of its kind built strictly for digital. It will be new canvas for storytelling and use parameters of your iPhone or iPad.
