Hitachi ships 500GB, 7mm drive for netbooks, first of its kind

by Gareth Mankoo

Hitachi have set a new benchmark in netbook hardware technology, with a drive that is just 7-mm thin. The TravelStar Z5K500 is a 2.5-inch drive that operates at 5,400 RPM and is the thinnest of its kind. It’s a step up from the 320GB version, since it provides 500GB storage space. The Z5K500 drive, however uses a single platter. It has 8MB cache like most recent drives and uses Advanced Format method to access data on its sectors.

The drive will be retailing this month, and will be available with resellers and stores. There’s a projected upgrade of the Hitachi G Drive Slim in the horizon that will ship soon. The Z5K500 is expected early next year for an unannounced price.
