Firefox mobile will debut for Symbian phones by April 2009
by mohsin
The Mobile Firefox team at Mozilla has realized that developing a version of Firefox for Linux and Windows Mobile is not enough, as it now plans to drop one into Symbian handsets too. Until recently, development for the browser, which is dubbed “Fennec”, was focused on versions for Linux Maemo and Windows Mobile devices. However, Mozilla’s Christian Sejersen says that, with Symbian-based phones now accounting for almost half the total smartphone sales, it was time to bring Fennec to the platform, and Mozilla are currently working together with engineers from Symbian to port the browser over.
If things go to plan, a full browsing-enabled version will be available by April 2009; a basic or limited browsing feature is also planned for February.
