Facebook shows off its data center power consumption to the world

by Gareth Mankoo

The world of corporates is jumping onto a bandwagon to ensure a sustainable model for co-existence with the rest of the world. Facebook, being one of the biggest brands on the Web is sure to keep in the same nerve and have leveraged their real-time dashboards to show the world how efficient their dealings with nature and resource consumption are. These dashboards have been added to measure efficiency in the company’s data centers, thus keeping a tab on the water and power usage. Two dashboards monitor the company’s Prineville, Ore. and Forest City, N.C. data centers , measuring both the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness at these facilities, as well as the ambient temperature and humidity. As of now, visitors on the Prineville and Forest City dashboards only see a display that covers 24 hours, and is delayed by 2.5 hours on both sites.

Facebook may well develop an API for the same. But there’s no telling what they’re up to next. The company claimed that once its data center in LuleĆ„, Sweden, comes online, they will begin adding data from that location, as well.
