Hanson Robotics has created the world’s first walking robot with humanlike expressions the “Albert Hugo”. Their new frubber material allows facial expressions as it requires much less force, almost 1/20th the force and energy than the softest animatronics materials. This means that the Albert head can run for hours on AA batteries, so it can be mobile and mount on a walking robot body.
Both the PKD android and the Albert Hubo are being used for AI development. Our big push is toward mass manufacturability. These robots should become a great entertainment medium in this century–a fusion of toys, computer animation, and intelligent machines. At that point, they will also be useful for education, training, simulation, and as a platform for more widespread AI development. The Hubo-Einstein and the PKD android are steps in this direction.
