Dopod U1000 takes on UMPC’s and every smartphone around
by Dhiram Shah
The Dopod U1000 has all the features of a UMPC but is small enough to fit in your pocket and you can use it as a mobile phone. Made by HTC corp Taiwan and later branded by Dopod the U1000 is powered by a 624 Mhz XScale processor and rides on the GSM 850/900/1800/1900 bands making it good for international roaming. It includes support for EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA which provide super high download speeds. One of the coolest feature of the device is the magnetic keyboard which attaches to the face of the U1000, to protect the screen, to use the keyboard you pull off the keyboard lay it flat and place the screen upright in a slot. They lock together and look like a laptop. The phone has a huge 5 inch touchscreen supporting VGA (640 x 480) resolution. It has 5 Gigs of internal flash memory memory which can be further expanded via the Micro SD card slot (upto 4GB). Specs include GPS, Bluetooth, WLAN, 3 Megapixel camera and stereo speakers. Making all this hocus pocus run is Windows Mobile Edition ver 5.0, hopefully they will offering version 6 (Crossbow) soon.
The Dopod U1000 is currently available in South Asia for 39,900 Taiwan dollars ($1,211). It will be available in Europe shortly as HTC Athena, no news when it will make to the US.
