Bay Lights campaign to celebrate 75 years of Bay Bridge with 25,000 LEDs
by Gareth MankooWhat may be touted as the world’s largest light installation, ‘Bay Lights’, a special program to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Created by New York artist Leo Villareal, this will see the installation of 25,000 LEDs that will illuminate the west span of the bridge, from March 5th, 2013 onward. The project will use complex algorithms to control the lights, thus creating animations that suit the moment.
A budget of $8 million has been kept aside by Arts, a non-profit that has been sending crews to set up 500 LEDs at a time in the middle of the night to complete this project. It may not be ready for the anniversary but will surely be done in time for America’s Cup and the completion of the all new eastern span.
