Augmented Reality is term that’s gaining momentum very very quickly and more so in the new year. We’ve seen it widely used in the gaming industry in a fruitful combination with mobile handsets and their cameras and of course the potential it has when tied into Virtual Reality scenarios is tremendous. The latest application of this technology was recently witnessed in a test with the United States Marine Corps on an armored turret. The system called ARMAR - Augmented Reality for Maintenance and Repair was developed at Columbia University’s Computer Graphics and User Interface Lab. The designers used an Android mobile handset to provide a viewable interface to control the graphics together with a head mounted display unit that provides graphic overlays to assist users while making repairs.

The system uses 3D animations to help demonstrate the appropriate tools and techniques to use in various repairs. As of now it’s still being tested with the military and if that works out we could see a similar system make it to the commercial market. This technology is going to go really far as it’s application can used in a wide variety of applications.
