The App Store has seen the mushrooming up of so many new applications for the iPhone, that it makes the iPhone the ultimate device for the future of digital media management. Almost all current generation phones that feature an IR port have some application that can help it turn into a remote control, however try finding one for the iPhone and you will understand the importance of the App Store. The UiRemote is a universal remote app for the iPhone, this project undertaken by a handful of scrappy University of Toronto students, uses a fingertip-sized IR blaster connected to the headphone jack paired with a very customizable app to control everything you desire.

Although still a prototype at this time, these people are obviously still tweaking it but they say they plan to release the actual Infrared Module and the Application in the next couple of months.
