Turn-by-turn GPS iPhone driving app on display at MWC

iphone-gps-concept.jpg A company that is versed in downloadable GPS driving apps for smartphones is showing off a turn-by-turn solution running on the iPhone at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The application produced by Sygic may face Apple's resistance when it is submitted shortly to App Store. The app gives directions with voice prompts, points of interest, support for multiple countries and locally stored maps. Last July, the iPhone maker seeded a beta version of iPhone Software 2.1 with a version of the CoreLocation framework that could recognize the cardinal direction of an iPhone through GPS as well as its velocity. But when Apple was about to release iPhone Software 2.1, the GPS capabilities were nowhere to found.

An app like Sygic's might have significant hurdles to overcome before it could be available for customers to purchase. Sygic's app provides an interesting proof-of-concept of what turn-by-turn GPS could look like if successfully arrives on the Apple handset. It reportedly worked well, although it did take a lengthy 30 seconds to initialize.
