Star Wars has had a strong influence on many. From Churches to gadgets and home theatres, the influence has manifested itself in many forms. The latest one being furniture. Inventor Keith Dixon was inspired by Star Wars (the Landspeeder vehicles in particular) and is creating a range of household furniture that hovers off the ground to give a feeling of weightlessness. The Lounger, which is an armchair, floats on magnets. Wow! The chair comprises a base and a see-through acrylic seat. Magnets attached to the base and the seat repels each other, forcing the seat to float at a height of up to 14in. A pair of connecting rods stops the seat shooting off sideways but allows it to move up and down. However the chair has its bummers too, people with heart pacemaker can't use it. The magnets may also affect a television if it's within 4ft to 5ft. Also if sit down with your wallet in your pocket, the magnets may wipe your credit card, unfortunately you will still have to clear the bills!
The Lounger is due to go on sale on March 14 at £5,875. Keith Dixon plans a limited initial run of 2,000 through his company, Hoverit.
