Styrofoam dome homes remind me of Tatooine

dome_homes_1.jpg I don't have a Star Wars hangover, but the resemblance is striking! These prefabricated styrofoam homes are manufactured by Japan Dome House Co., Ltd. and can be assembled in a jiffy. Called the "habitat for the 21st century," I wonder if the company understands that styrofoam is an environmental hazard as well. Moving on, lets get to the dimensions and the basics; the structure is built from100% expanded polystyrene foam and boasts of being earthquake and typhoons resistant. The walls are treated with a flame retardant to keep it safe from accidents. The natural insulation that it provides due to its properties significantly lowers the need to set up heaters and fireplaces. The 25-feet by 13-feet wide dome is suitable for kitsch recreations like karaoke, massage rooms and disco lounges. For 3 million yen (about $30,000), it's quite a fancy out-house one can procure. Take a look at the pictures after the break.

The Aso Farm Land resort village in Kyushu uses about 480 styrofoam domes as lodging, recreational facilities and retail shops.
