Smart Posters lets you watch movie content on your phone
As you walk out of your favorite multiplex after watching 2hours worth of entertainment, you notice posters of the movie coming next. The posters just contain the familiar faces donning different roles in that movie, but wouldn’t it be nice to see what the movie is all about just by pointing your phone camera at it and directly viewing the trailer or other exclusive content right there on your mobile phone. If you were in Japan this wouldn’t be so hard to believe a concept, they have just finished initial testing of what are called as ‘Smart Posters’. Using technology developed by Near Field Communication (NFC) which is a short-range high-frequency wireless communication technology that lets users view digital content simply by holding their compatible cell phones near the posters. The testing has been conducted in the Chiba-area shopping mall, by the phone operator SoftBank Mobile, along with NTT Data, Hitachi and Dutch smart chip maker Gemalto. The testing is being done with WALL-E and Tinker Bell movie posters embedded with NFC tags.
These posters are different from the QR codes printed on various advertisement posters, in that they do not require access to the internet to view the content, all it needs is just a quick scan of the phone and proximity towards the poster. We hope that just like QR codes being tested here we too will see smart posters at our nearest multiplex soon.
