Simroid reacts to the dentist's drill

simroid.jpgI hate going to the dentist. I don't mind a surgery or even a bullet wound but lord please save me from the dentists' drill! If share my sentiments then you will be relived to know that novice dentists can practice on Simroid, a robotic dental patient. She was introduced at the 2007 International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo. This fembot patient has the ability to follow spoken instructions, closely monitor a dentist's performance during mock treatments, and react in a human-like way to mouth pain. Since Simroid's looks human-like, her behavior motivates people to treat her like a human being, instead of an object. Thus she helps dental trainees learn how to better communicate with patients. What really makes her worth the effort is that she can simulate a gagging reflex incase the dentist inserts the dental instruments too far into her mouth. (Video after the jump)

Simroid's body and control system was developed by Kokoro Company Ltd. And she is equipped with a system of air-powered muscles and soft silicone skin. She even has sensitive teeth and via her mouth loaded with sensors, she knows when her dentist-in-training makes a mistake. And to express her pain, she grimaces, moves her hands and eyes, and says, "That hurts."
