Shark Shield repels sharks

Did you know that four people were killed by sharks last year and 58 suffered injuries related to shark bites. This far low compared to the 79 attacks (11 of them fatal) in the year 2000. Last year the U.S. had about 38 shark attacks –more than any nation in the world. We are giving you the stats so that you can appreciate the efforts put in by the guys at Australia-based Shark Shield. They have come out with a board-mounted "Surf," which it describes as "the first electronic shark-deterrent system specifically designed for surfers." Sharks are supposed to have receptors in their snout that picks up the electrical field generated by the system. The "shark-safe zone" is about 26 feet in diameter. The fish goes into "muscular spasms" that renders it incapable of attacking. Hopefully this does not do any damage to the poor creature after all you are intruding into its territory.

The battery for the Shark Shield lasts for about seven hours and costs $700.
