Sci-fi style orbiting power plant to provide Solar Power to earth

space_solar_station.jpg

A startup company located in Los Angeles County, California, has big plans to sell energy to users here on earth with solar energy captured by solar panels that are orbiting the planet. The system is still in a theoretical sort of phase and isn’t yet fully developed. The outer-space (I mean even being in orbit constitutes as outer space right?) plant, that the LA company named Solaren Corp. is set to launch sometime in the year 2015. The system up there in space will be using electromagnetic waves to transmit power to a receiving station back here on earth. The receiving station is located in Fresno County, California. The Solaren project is expected to deliver PG&E 1,700 gigawatt-hours per year. Sounds like the makings of a great science fiction movie, but on a more serious note, the concept has merit and anything that utilizes green/clean energy sources can’t be bad.
