Samsung unveils Laptop with Flash memory instead of Hard Drive
At the Cebit technology fair in Germany, Samsung has unveiled a prototype Laptop which has 32 GB of Flash memory instead of a traditional hard drive. The newer memory chips are smaller in size and occupy the same space as traditional 1.8" disk-based drives. The advantages are Flash memory is much faster the prototype laptop that Samsung showed off was able to boot (the operating system was not mentioned) in 18 seconds versus 31 seconds for the laptop with a regular hard disk drive. As it does not hav any moving parts it is completely silent. But for all the benefits, there still remains one big downside: cost.
Even though memory prices have declined a 32GB SSD as seen in the prototype Samsung laptop would cost about $960 for the memory alone. Maybe you can get a slower processor as it is the Flash memory is pretty fast.
