Samsung Electronics unveils new DRAM chip
Samsung Electronics Co. said it has successfully developed a new DRAM chip that uses less electricity, and so will be compatible with a wider range of products. It also expects the new chip to cost 30 to 40 percent less to produce. The new 512-megabit double data rate 2, or DDR2, synchronous dynamic random access memory chip uses 70-nanometer processing, the smallest process technology yet applied to a DRAM device. Samsung said the new device will have double the number of chips yielded per wafer compared with the current 512-megabit DDR2 based on 90-nanometer processes.
