Philips and Lite-on announce an affordable $199 Blu-ray drive

Blu-ray_drive.jpg With the advent of next-gen products it's logical that price warfare be the next armor in the battlefield. Keeping the spirit is Philips and Lite-on, who have announced an affordable $199 Blu-ray drive. The DH-401S BD-ROM drive from Philips and Lite-on is apparently an answer to the $200 HD-A2s. the specs read: Spec-wise, the drive reads either single- or dual-layer BD-R/RE/ROM discs at up to 4X speeds, while single- or double-layer DVD±R or DVD-ROM discs can be read at 12X and single or double-layer DVD±RW discs can be read at 8X speeds. DVD, Single-layer or Double-layer media at 4X maximum. Single Layer DVD ±R or DVD-ROM can be read at 12X max, while Double Layer DVD±R and Single Layer DVD±RW can be read at 8X max. CD-R/RW/ROM has a maximum read speed of 32X.

Philips and Lite-on's affordable $199 Blu-ray drive doesn't have writing capabilities, but for those of you building out HTPCs, this one may be a wise choice.
