Patience Pays, Queue up for the bus rather than walk say experts

london_bus.jpg According to the Mathematicians it is wiser to wait for the bus than walking to the destination. According to them, no matter how irritating the wait is, you will reach faster if you stay put for the bus. Justin Chen, from the California Institute of Technology, and Scott Kominers and Robert Wyatt Sinnott, both from Harvard, were motivated to look into the poser after considering whether Mr Chen would be better off waiting for the erratic bus service or walking to Mr Kominers's house for a meeting. Using d for distance, I for bus stop, n for the number of bus stops and v for velocity or speed, the team came up with various complex equations which all backed the theory that you should wait at the first stop. In only extreme cases where there is less than one bus an hour and the desired destination is very close will the strategy fail.
