Nintendo Wii DVD support coming but…

wii_dvd.jpg Nintendo Wii DVD support coming but…it's not coming soon. Nintendo has confirmed that DVD playback won't be added to the console this year. Apparently they won't be able to produce as many DVD-enabled units to cope with the Christmas rush, hence the delay. The news was conveyed via the Q&A section of its Japanese Wii website. However in November last year, software developer Sonic Solutions had claimed that its CinePlayer CE software would be used in the Wii as the DVD playback application. It also said the enhanced Wii would be released by Nintendo "in the latter half of 2007". But Nintendo claims to be boggled by "production restraints' and that "DVD licensing fees... are higher than expected". It's always been debated whether Wii will incorporate a firmware upgrade or come out with the second generation with DVD playback.

"Sorry for the inconvenience, but please be patient," is all that Nintendo has to offer its Wii fans.
