Nexus One could make cheap satellite, Google and NASA shoot ‘em into space

google-satellite.jpg Here’s something weird, Google employees got together with a few guys from NASA and decided to shoot the Nexus One into space. Now we know that the handset didn’t really sell as well as Google hoped, but shooting it off into space is just overkill. But this was all just an experiment called NexusOne PhoneSat project. These guys from the two of the biggest names in their respective fields used the Google handset to see if low-cost mobile phone components would be capable of withstanding space travel. So two handsets were strapped on to a little rocket and shot into orbit. This would actually help figure out if these low cost components could be used in satellites, if they could survive the rigors of ‘space travel’ of course. One of the two handsets had a bit of a problem on‘re-entry’ but the second managed to capture 2.5 hours of video. Not bad for a phones that’s almost reached ‘has-been’ status.
