New study says texting while driving equals drunk driving
An SMS can be your lifesaver and your debt trap in Sweden, with its swift banking transactions done over the mobile. However, that's not the case here in the US; a new study is showing how dangerous texting can be while driving a car. It even goes as far as to say that tapping out text messages behind the wheel may be more dangerous than drinking and driving. In this new study, British researchers found texting decreased a driver's reaction time 35 percent. Compare that to someone under the influence of marijuana who gives a 21 percent delay. In addition, alcohol decreased reaction time 12 percent. The study found people who texted while they drove also had a dramatic decrease in their ability to control their steering wheel. In fact, the study found texters had a ninety-one percent decrease in their ability to control the direction of their car.
Obviously, texting is a distraction and no one should text while driving, above all let's not forget The Metrolink commuter rail engineer involved in the deadly train collision in Chatsworth, Calif., last Friday. After which five states have outlawed driving while texting and at least 20 more are considering legislation against it.
