New HP webcam has slight issue tracking African American faces
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has successfully managed to veer away from the media spotlight when it comes to scandal like news, until now. At a demo booth of their new webcam, it seems HP got into a bit of a racist situation. It turns out that their new webcam with a face tracking feature works out quite well…. if you’re white. However, if you happen to be of the African American lineage, the system doesn’t apparently work. During the demo, the system quite easily tracked a Caucasian lady’s face but failed to track her African American co-workers. It’s quite obviously a small glitch in the system and it’s quite unlikely that that the camera could be construed to be a racist, but according to a report an HP rep explained that the reason for this faux pas could be because – of contrasting conditions where there was insufficient foreground lighting. Well it’s as good an explanation as any.
