Manhattan to get its own big brother watching traffic

manhattan.jpg Enough has been said of the events of 9/11, nobody wants anything like that to happen ever again. As a preventative measure against such thing from happening ever again Operation Sentinel or the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative has been proposed. It is a new security strategy to monitor new vehicles entering the Manhattan area using devices which have the ability to photograph, and scan the license plates of, cars and trucks at all bridges and tunnels, they could also detect the presence of radioactive substances using advanced sensors. The police have been using technology to read license plates and to check the information against databases since 2007.

This new initiative is the result of a joint plan of action combining The Police Department and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and its just one element of a 36-page plan for security, mainly focused on the site of ground zero. The Lower Manhattan Security Initiative is a $90 million program and it is not going down well civil rights activists.
