KDDI Japan to deliver super high resolution movies on demand

fiber_optic.jpgKDDI Japan which already delivered DVD quality movies on the Internet has decided to give the service a shot in the arm by delivering Quad HD movies over the same pipe. Put it simply the Japanese telecom giant will soon offer the world's first 4K digital cinema equivalent which has 4 times the resolution of HDTV at 4096 pixels x 2160 lines. The technology is still under development and KDDI claims to deliver it can fit video of the same quality as the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) requires into a typical ADSL or fiber-optic internet connection. To maintain a resolution four times the standard HD, DCI video consumes bandwidth at 250 Mbps however KDDI's new technology does the same in under 20 Mbps. Broadband in Japan is between 50 - 100 Mbps which makes delivery of the DCI movies possible.

An eight processor server determines the parts of the image which change the most from frame to frame and looking at the motion it applies the most appropriate compression algorithm.
