JVC HD Everio GZ-HD7 Full High-Definition 3-CCD Camcorder

JVC.jpg
JVC HD Everio GZ-HD7 is the first consumer full High-Definition 3-CCD camcorder capable of shooting and recording full HD images (1920 x 1080i). The camcorder also features a Fujinon lens used in broadcast video cameras, now being used in a consumer camcorder for the first time. The new JVC Everio GZ-HD7 allows consumers to conveniently capture and share their memories in full high definition without the need for removable tapes or discs, and offers the simplicity of a point-and-shoot camcorder combined with the features, technology and manual controls that appeal to the serious videographer. With a 60GB built-in hard drive the JVC HD Everio provides up to five hours of full HD 1920x1080i recording at a high 30Mbps(MAX). For bright, realistic colors the HD Everio uses three 1/5-inch CCDs – one each for red, green and blue, incorporating 16:9 progressive scan CCDs and pixel shift technology.

Other features include optical image stabilization, a full array of manual controls, multiple digital connections, bundled editing and archiving software, and availability of an optional HD Everio SHARE STATION for easily transferring high definition footage to disc. Also, because JVC HD Everio GZ-HD7 records in the MPEG2 Transport Stream video format, HD Everio recordings can be archived onto Blu-ray discs using provided software and a high definition Blu-ray recorder. JVC HD Everio HD Hard Disk Camcorder GZ-HD7 will be available in April for $1,799.95.

Love to see it compared to the Canon HV20 in a shootout. :)

This one would compete with Sony HDR-SR1 (not as much as Canon HV20) because Sony HDR-SR1 (30GB) and JVC GZ-HD7 (60GB) both are Hard Drive based High Def camcorders. One is CMOS sensor (HDR-SR1) and another one is 3-CCD (GZ-HD7). One creates AVCHD format files (HDR-SR1) and another one MPEG-2 (GZ-HD7). Support for MPEG-2 are lot more than support for AVCHD format. HDR-SR1 cost about $600 less than GZ-HD7. GZ-HD7 body is plastic, and HDR-SR1 is not. GZ-HD7 records at 1920 x 1080i while HDR-SR1 (1440 x 760i) ..........................

and much much more (Both looks good)

Cannot be captured directly into Final Cut Express HD or iMovie HD. Seems to cater more to PC. If you want to keep copies of your video you must purchase their seperate DVD recorder or copy files to your Mac then recopy to DVD. Tapes are so much easier to file and catalogue. I'm bringing mine back.

Can someone confirm Don's post? I was under the impresssion that you could push this video directly into iMovie...

True, can't import straight into Final Cut Express HD. You first import to Quicktime and then import to Final Cut. The file sizes are large and it takes time. The extra QT step is not fun. I am still experimenting. The video quality is superb on an HD set. So far, it is worth it.

What a waste! I bought this camcorder and can't import the files to iMovie 08. I also could not import to Final Cut HD (4.5) as neither the QuickTime Component for Everio.pkg nor the Easy Setups for Everio 50i files are showing up in the applications they where intended for.
Either way one would have to:
    1. copy the .mob file to the Mac
    2. Import file to QT
    3. Export the file to the Mac
    4. Import the file to FC HD
Back to stoneage! I rather go back to my Canon GL-1 where I just have to connect the FW cable and can start importing directly to iMovie or Final Cut - that's it!
