iPods and HDD recorders may be taxed in Japan

kittypod.jpg Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs proposed a tentative plan concerning the compensation for private music and video recordings which reminds me of the movie Minority Report where the criminals are caught and prosecuted before they commit the crime except in this situation everyone is a criminal. Under this system, part of copyright royalty is added to the prices of recording media, such as MDs (mini disc) and DVDs, as well as digital recording devices, and it is distributed to copyright holders through a copyright administration corporation. Currently, (portable) music players are excluded from this system.

Recorders with a built-in HDD and portable audio recorders were targeted for the compensation system because "These devices are primarily used for music and video recording," the agency said. If this rule becomes effective, Japanese consumers will be able to copy terrestrial digital broadcast programs as much as nine times. Currently, they can be copied only once (copy once).
