India working on $10 Laptop
The good intentions of the OLPC and Nick Negroponte and gang fell on deaf ears when the proposal went to the Indian Government. No doubt the idea of providing inexpensive laptop computer for the underprivileged children around the world, especially to those in developing countries, to provide them with access to knowledge and modern forms of education is very noble, but India doesn't seem to be buying it. They have gone a step further and agreed to look into a proposal that offers similar laptops for as low as $47. Eventually, with mass production the prices of the laptops are expected to hit as low as $10!
India's Human Resources Development ministry's is in midst of finalizing one of the two designs already in and public sector undertaking Semiconductor Complex is showing quite an interest in the project.

I don't think you can produce a laptop for 10$ that can be used effectively. The OLPC is much more realistic.
