India is a land synonymous with elephants, yet this sacred being does not get the security or the right of way on the road. More than 20 elephant deaths have occurred in last 10 years due to rail movements, or holding up of traffic on the busy national highways whenever they use the corridor to cross over. Keeping this in mind, the National Highways Authority of India says it will build the world's first flyover corridors for elephants over major highways and railways to link major pilgrim towns of India. The two flyovers, each 1.2km long and 100 meters wide, would be in place in nine months. The sides of the elevated elephant corridor would be fenced with trees and foliage in such a manner that it would be breach-proof and at the same time hide the concrete walls from the animals. Now if only every country cared for its wildlife as much as India.
