Dutch Cycling Federation want exterior airbags on cars

airbag.jpg High-speed impacts of cars with pedestrian often result in fatality. This phenomenon is also concurrent with cyclists. Since some car manufacturers are incorporating hoods that pop up when the car senses a pedestrian impact, the Dutch Cycling Federation wants to know why they are being left out; they want cars to have exterior airbags to protect cyclists in collisions with cars. I have been to Amsterdam and seen for myself those dedicated cyclist lanes, so I totally agree with their demand. The federation estimates that external airbags on cars could save 60 cyclists and eliminates 1,500 serious injuries every year. The hood-mounted airbags would be the ideal solution.

Swedish company Autoliv Inc. has created an air bag that deploys from the A-pillars and extends over the hood to keep people from crashing down onto the engine block.
