Darwin Centre gets a Cocoon, a high-tech science facility

Darwin_Centre.jpg Money invested in education is money well invested. A £78million high-tech science facility, the Darwin Centre, has opened by the Natural History museum to encourage the public to quiz leading researchers. It has an eight-storey Cocoon that houses 17 million insects and three million plant specimens. The facility is made of curved white concrete, steel and glass the 214ft-long structure. Public can have a 'Cocoon tour' where they can watch and talk to scientists at work in new laboratories. The main aim of this facility is for learners from secondary school level and above to be enlightened and can also learn more from virtual guides and interactive displays. It has a Climate Change wall that has sensors to make it come to life when you walk up to it One feature will allow users to 'capture' and analyse different mosquitoes using a touch screen, before considering ways of controlling the spread of malaria.

You can also get to watch Live Science shows in the Attenborough Studio and the communication centre will host interactive shows by some of the 350 resident scientists followed by soon-to-come 'The Secrets of Spider Dating', 'Meteorites: The Change Makers', and 'Discovering Dinosaurs.' The Cocoon also has a collage of interactive screens that will show you a lot about global warming. An Angela Marmont Centre will be opened to 'citizen scientists' and allow those with an interest in natural history to study and bring in their own finds. Science made interesting – the children of this era are so blessed!
