Danville uses GPS for trash collectors

trash_collectors.jpg The Public Works Department in Danville is planning to use high tech gadgets to reduce fuel costs to better manage fleet and fuel costs. Public Works Dept. jobs are divided into two categories the local yard waste collector along with being the refuse and metal or other scrap waste collector. For refuse waste the trucks area of work spans the whole city, but a specialized service truck like that of metal collection or such do not need to be running around the entire city doing house calls aimlessly. The new GPS system will make their jobs easier by assigning exact coordinates into a handheld device that has software containing different categories on their routes, and whenever they see particular pile-ups, they will log that location into the GPS device exactly how does one know if there is a pile up in a certain area is unclear.

The driver then has to upload information from the handheld GPS device into a computer which then makes it easy to track collection patterns on a map. Further developments will make the job of uploading easier when the information will be directly fed wirelessly into the truck itself.
