CMEL shows off ultra slim 25 inch OLED at FPD 2008

Oled.JPG Chi Mei EL (CMEL) is displaying a 25-inch AMOLED panel, which is just 0.04 inches thin, at the FPD International 2008 in Japan. The FPD International exhibition in Japan is based on the emerging OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology. Kodak's latest digital photo frame is using CMEL's AMOLED; in addition, through working with DuPont, CMEL has adopted a printed OLED technology. Sony had shown off a rather advanced flexible OLED screen a few months back, but that was just a few inches across. Sony also showed us the super slim 11 inch screens that are readily available. While still a prototype, the screen is nevertheless more than twice the size of a Sony prototype at the same convention, which is similar in thickness but only measures 11 inches diagonally.

CMEL president Douglas Park indicated that demand for larger sized AMOLED panels has increased, and CMEL has shifted its shipment concentration from 2.4- to 2-8-inch panels to larger sizes of 3.4- and 4.3-inch panels and the company is seeing 70% yield this half of the year. CMEL's effort has a WXGA screen resolution, of 1,366x768, which is near-HD quality, as well as all the usual OLED benefits of low image blur and low power consumption.
CMEL has successfully developed a 7.6-inch AMOLED and the company estimates mass production will commence in the fourth quarter with monthly production of 30,000 units and yield rate would be increase from 60% to 70% by year-end.
