Cell Phones being used to teach 5th Grade Class Students

phone_use.jpg A project undertaken at the Trinity Meadows Intermediate School in Keller, Texas, has equipped 53 fifth-grade students with phones containing "Mobile Learning Environment" software developed by University of Michigan scientist Elliot Soloway. These phones can be used to map concepts, animate drawings, surf useful stuff on the internet and use them accordingly in their lessons. As many students are used to using sophisticated cell-phones, Soloway has described the mobile devices as the modern "paper and pencil". This was first initiated by 5th Grade teacher Matt Cook, who said that students will be more interested in lessons because now they will be taught in their "language".

I am not sure if these mobile devices can be used to make calls just like a normal cell-phone. I guess it would be more on wireless PDA technology. Makes me wish I was back in school again!
