California to be the first test bed for electric transport

Califo.JPG The San Francisco Bay Area is leading the charge toward the adoption of electric cars and a green electrical-grid infrastructure. The Bay Area cities have joined hands with the technology provider Better Place for the electric-car initiative. This isn’t without the blessing of California's Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger, and some Bay Area mayors who met at San Francisco's City Hall, to make the California region, an early adopter of the electric car scheme. Israel, Denmark, and Australia have already come on board. The new $1 billion project is expected to encompass the cities of San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland. Similar deals have been signed with governments elsewhere, and now California marks the first stop in the US market. If only the rest of the country takes such green initiatives, it’s not long before the entire US turns into a green nation.

Infrastructure deployments are slated to begin in 2010, with the goal of having electric cars available as mass-market offerings in 2012.
