British IT workers to test life without Windows for a month
Blair Thompson and Derek Cook are two Windows Addicts. They are Microsoft application instructors and have 30 years of PC experience. They have used a range of Microsoft products ranging from DOS to Windows 7 RC. So what is so great about that! I bet you will be asking this right now. Well in a post on their website they both have decided that they will not use Microsoft Windows for a month and instead will be using GNU/Linux. They want to see whether Linux is capable of delivering the function and style of delivery that an established Windows user can adapt easily or not. They plan to begin their 31-day mission by the third week of May. The pair will be using eeePC901s and it has been modified; one has a 2GB of memory, a 32GB Supertalent SSD and a touchscreen, while the other has a 2GB RAM but is otherwise standard. Both participants will erase Windows from their eeePCs on day one and use GNU/Linux for everything, apart from the work environment where neither can do so due to the nature of their work.
Applications used will be rated on ease of use, function and familiarity (similarity to Windows). Familiarity in this context means how comfortable a Windows user is with the interface or method of functioning of the replacement. They hope to reach a conclusion on day 31; if this is not possible, the project will be extended to a day when they can reach a conclusion. So after a month we will see – Windows or Linux? Is Gates crossing his fingers already?
