Bioshock now a movie!!
There's an ongoing debate in the community over whether or not linearity is a good thing in a game. I for one am a firm believer in flexible linearity - giving the players a chance to experiment and explore without having to break away from the central plotline. BioShock caters to this kind of preference. The story is a strictly linear affair; you can very easily follow the gold arrow indicator from one objective to the next and tromp through the whole game in a dozen hours. But you'd miss out on two thirds of the content - half of the pleasure of playing Bioshock is found in careful and thorough exploration. However that being said its marketing guys are following a linear path carved by other gaming franchises, that being producing a movie adaptation of its hugely successful game. According to Joystiq.com, "A reliable source within a major film production company has told Joystiq that the two have been getting along famously, with a movie adaptation of 2K's successful franchise already being discussed by the Big Daddies internally."
The site adds, "The studio hopes to bring the fallen aquatic utopia of Rapture to celluloid life through extensive use of green screen technology, an approach not dissimilar to Legendary Pictures' interpretation of 300. If the computer generated approach is deemed feasible and fitting, the focus can then shift to capturing BioShock's secondary (and uninhabited) characters." Lets wait & watch the progress of this news.
