Audi Q5 mmi takes on the BMW iDrive with a joystick

audi_Q5_mmi.jpg Come March and USA will see the release of the midsize Audi Q5 with the third generation MMI cockpit controller with joystick functionality. Audi's MMI is generally considered the best and the most useful. The details are being released slowly on the MMI and the Q5 but nevertheless it sounds MMI is a big leap forward in technology. Basic layout remains the same with the knurled control wheel on the center behind the gearshift. You can tilt the wheel in 8 different directions to move around the map and then press the button to select your destination. Four function dependent buttons and 8 fixed function buttons namely for navigation, phone, audio etc are in two columns to the left and right of the MMI controller. BMW in their 2009 3 and 7 series including their 2010 Z4 borrowed and improved on Audi's MMI. In a BMW, you just slide your fingers to get to your respective buttons. In an Audi, you have to take off your hand from the controller and depending on your dexterity, you might have to just take your sight as well off the road for a minute to guide your fingers to the right button. Well that does take a bite on the safety aspect of the SUV.

The 7 inches TFT screen supposedly "large" according to Audi Standards has a resolution of 800x480 pixels and backlit LED. BMW redefined the so called large with a 10.2 inches large screen and an amazing resolution of 1280 x 480. BMW also uses transflective display which uses sunlight for daytime viewing which is considered the best, definitely better than Backlit LED display.

The Q5 under its hood sports a 232 hp V6 engine, and comes with an all wheel drive and six speed automatic transmission. Mileage is not being mentioned but with the kind of engine you can put it at 20 miles a gallon. Price could be anywhere between $32,000 and $40.000. Being an Audi, you can expect luxurious interiors with an awesome looking cockpit and an excellent steering with roller wheels instead of buttons for few of its functions.

It comes into a segment over crowed with the BMW X3, Infiniti EX35, Acura RDX, and market leader Lexus RX 350 and also with Cadillac SRX.
