A-Space a new Facebook for the A-Team among spies

national_security_1.jpg The CIA, FBI, and National Security Agency reportedly are testing on a new social networking site that is being designed for spies and other possessors of privileged information. 16 US Intelligence agencies are going to be using this new service nationwide simply called A-Space. The Director of National Intelligence will launch the site to the nation's entire intelligence community on September 22. The move is the latest part of an ongoing effort to transform the analytical business following the failure to detect the 9/11 terrorist attacks or find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The Objective of this site is to share information on terrorist activities and troop movements around the world. The information posted to the new social network is highly classified and will not be accessible by the general public. Access will be limited to intelligence personnel with the proper security clearance and a reason to be examining particular information. After all, you do not want the network to become a gold mine of sensitive information for future double agents.

The DNI has also built an internal collaborative site called Intellipedia, modeled on Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. It has also created a version of http://del.icio.us, the social book-marking site, for members of the intelligence community. Another tool that has been developed is a national intelligence library, which can be accessed from A-Space. Access to A-Space will require a smart card simply called as the MasterCard that helps keep a tab on usage patterns.
