A UMD-less PSP was always planned by Sony
Sony had major plans to make a PSP without the UMD drive right from the beginning of the system’s life. The company didn’t want to just bring it on just like that because they thought nobody would enjoy it. So they built the right environment for it first. They have been working on this for the past two years. It certainly makes sense for Sony to plan ahead so far in advance, since most hardware manufacturers do.
