2012 Olympic Stadium Unveiled at London
With the Beijing Olympics round the bend it's only fair that we discuss the London Olympics as well. The 2012 Olympics will be held in London and the organizers have unveiled the stadium plans. The 80,000-seat venue in Strafford, East London will cost 496 million pounds ($1,043,707,639) and will be scaled down to a 25,000 capacity venue after the Games with its main use for athletics. The design includes a sunken bowl featuring permanent seating for 25,000 spectators, with the remaining 55,000 seats in a temporary structure at the top. A roof will cover about two thirds of the seating area of the stadium. Adding to the pizzazz is fact that the stadium is surrounded by water on three sides.
According to the design chief Rob Sheard the Olympic flame might not be attached to the stadium itself, but placed just north of the venue. Construction will begin next year and finish by the summer of 2011.
