An Australian website has posted 10 ways to bring the Internet to a grinding halt. Although not all the methods described are practical some are very much possible and have affected us in the past as well. For eg - Early last year Internet traffic in the Middle East and certain parts of Asia was severely affected when a couple of undersea Internet cables were cut. What if undersea cables or backbones connecting every continent were cut in a co-ordinated manner. Next is the creation of Botnets or affecting hundreds of millions of computers that automatically distribute malicious software, viruses, spam and trojans in an attempt to infect other computers. The infected computers can be programmed to access popular websites like Google, facebook etc at the same time thus creating a DDos attack. There are other ways too, but a global Internet meltdown would not be short of a catastrophe.
